Taylor Wray, a distinguished lacrosse coach known for his achievements at Saint Joseph’s, has been appointed as the James H. Greene, Jr. Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse at Penn. Wray’s tenure at Saint Joseph’s was marked by significant success, including eight regular season conference championships and the program’s first NCAA appearances.
“Taylor is a proven winner, and his teams play an exciting and tough brand of lacrosse,” stated Alanna Wren, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W’69 Director of Athletics and Recreation. She expressed confidence in Wray’s ability to develop student-athletes both on and off the field.
Wray shared his enthusiasm about joining Penn: “I am deeply honored to be named the James H. Greene, Jr. Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse at Penn.” He emphasized the importance of upholding over 125 years of lacrosse history and tradition at the university.
Wray acknowledged several individuals involved in his appointment process: “Thank you to Director of Athletics and Recreation, Alanna Wren, Senior Associate AD Tim Folan, Assistant AD Keith Maurer, the incredible alumni, and all those who participated in the search process for this opportunity.”
His previous role saw him transform Saint Joseph’s from a winless team to a competitive force with multiple conference titles. His leadership also extended beyond coaching; he was instrumental in fundraising efforts that improved facilities significantly.
Before his time at Saint Joseph’s, Wray held positions at Lehigh University and Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., contributing to their respective successes. Additionally, he has coached various national teams for Canada since 2010.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Wray had an accomplished playing career at Duke University and later professionally in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He earned accolades such as NLL Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year during his career with Calgary Roughnecks and Philadelphia Wings.
Wray holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a master’s degree from Queens University.
