PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler delivered a standout performance on Sunday afternoon, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Wheeler’s one-hit gem included 12 strikeouts and no walks, marking his first complete game since August 2021.
Reflecting on his performance, Wheeler remarked, “There’s been some other satisfying ones along the way, but today was probably up there.” Manager Rob Thomson was more definitive in his assessment: “Yes.”
J.T. Realmuto, who has caught for Wheeler 140 times across regular and postseason games, praised the pitcher’s command and effectiveness. “From start to finish, that was as good of command and as good his stuff has been since I’ve been with him,” he said.
Wheeler’s dominance nearly resulted in a historic achievement if not for Austin Hays’ solo home run in the fifth inning. This marked the only baserunner allowed by Wheeler throughout the game. The last time a Phillies pitcher achieved such a feat was Roy Halladay’s perfect game in May 2010.
Despite reaching 100 pitches by the end of the eighth inning, Wheeler returned to pitch the ninth after Bryson Stott hit a go-ahead two-run homer. The crowd at Citizens Bank Park responded enthusiastically, chanting support for Wheeler as he closed out the game.
Stott noted the intensity of fan support: “I had to turn up my PitchCom for the first time in a little bit. That was incredible.” Realmuto added that it was challenging to hear pitch calls due to crowd noise but trusted his instincts.
Reds manager Terry Francona acknowledged Wheeler’s competitive spirit: “You don’t see guys going out there for the ninth too often anymore. That was impressive.”
Thomson expressed admiration for Wheeler’s consistent excellence: “That was as dominant as you’re going to get other than a perfect game. He amazes me.”
