SAN DIEGO — Zack Wheeler, one of baseball’s standout pitchers in the first half of 2025, has opted for rest over participating in the All-Star Game. Despite a strong performance this season, Wheeler chose to skip the game to prepare for a hopeful postseason and World Series run.
In his last start before the break, Wheeler pitched six innings against the Padres, allowing four runs and two home runs to Jackson Merrill. This marked only the third time in his career that he allowed two homers to a single batter in a game.
“His fastball looks like it’s at your belt line when it’s at your head,” said Merrill. “It’s one of the best fastballs I’ve ever seen.”
Wheeler had not allowed more than one earned run since May 29 against the Braves. He concluded the first half with a 9-3 record and a 2.36 ERA.
“Just consistency,” Wheeler commented on his performance. “Baseball is hard… you’re going to get hit around a little bit sometimes.”
The Phillies’ rotation has been impressive, leading MLB with top ERA and strikeout rates, tied for most innings pitched, and an MLB-best 13.1 WAR according to FanGraphs.
“Everybody’s done well,” Wheeler noted about his teammates’ health and performance.
Cristopher Sánchez was considered for the NL All-Star team but was unavailable due to pitching commitments. The Phillies still honored him with an All-Star bonus.
“It just means a lot,” Sánchez expressed through an interpreter about his team’s support.
Ranger Suárez also declined joining the NL team for rest reasons similar to Wheeler’s choice.
“A break is always nice,” Wheeler remarked about taking time off during summer heat as they prepare for the second-half push.
