SAN DIEGO — Zack Wheeler, a prominent pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, has opted out of starting in the National League’s 95th All-Star Game. The event will take place at Truist Park in Atlanta, close to where Wheeler began his baseball journey. Despite the honor it would have brought him and his NL Cy Young candidacy, Wheeler chose to focus on preparing for the second half of the season.
“I’d just rather get myself ready to go for the second half,” Wheeler said over the weekend in San Diego. He emphasized his commitment to his team and their pursuit of a World Series championship.
Wheeler has been a strong contender for the NL Cy Young Award, finishing second in 2021 and 2024. He expressed motivation to win both a championship and a Cy Young this year. His performance could significantly impact his Hall of Fame prospects once he retires after his current contract ends in 2027.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson supports Wheeler’s decision to sit out this week’s game, suggesting it might enhance his chances for the Cy Young Award by helping him stay healthy throughout the rest of the year.
Reflecting on his childhood near Atlanta, Wheeler recalled fond memories from playing Little League baseball before advancing through travel ball teams and eventually becoming a standout player at East Paulding High School. He was drafted sixth overall by the Giants in 2009.
Wheeler is currently experiencing one of his best seasons at age 35, leading several statistical categories including strikeouts and WHIP. As he continues pitching some of the best baseball of his career, he remains focused on long-term goals rather than short-term accolades like starting an All-Star Game.
“It would have been fun for sure,” Wheeler remarked about potentially pitching on Tuesday. However, he acknowledged that maintaining consistency is crucial as he progresses through this pivotal stage in his career.
