No. 8/24 Baseball Plates 19 Runs in Victory Over Swarthmore

Arcadia University Athletics issued the following announcement on Mar. 29.

The No. 8/24 Arcadia University baseball team overcame an early deficit to storm past Swarthmore, 19-10 on Tuesday afternoon on the road. The Knights improved their record to 18-3 on the season.  

Swarthmore scored the first five runs of the game in the first inning, but the Knights then outscored the Garnet, 19-5 over the next eight innings. Arcadia scored runs in each of the final five innings, including exploding for six in the seventh, which opened up a 15-9 lead for the Knights.  

Eight different Knights drove in a run, including Connor Cheeseman and Aaron Oswalt, who each drove in four. Oswalt had a pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth inning to get the Knights within two runs of Swarthmore, 7-5. The Knights tallied 20 hits in the game.  

Kyle Coffey picked up his first career victory on the mound for the Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Garnet scored five runs in the first inning, but Alex Madera had an RBI walk in the second innings to cut the Swarthmore lead to 5-1. The Garnet added a run in the bottom of the second, and another in the fourth to push their lead to 7-1.  
  • Oswalt hit his first career home run in the fifth with his pinch-hit grand slam, which got the Knights within, 7-5. Swarthmore got two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead to 9-5.
  • The Knights scored four runs in the sixth inning as Justin Massielo got the scoring started as he scored Joseph Kumar with an RBI single. Cheeseman was the next batter and walked, scoring Madera. Emilio Pallante then came in as a pinch hitter and doubled to left field scoring Hunter Curley and Massielo to tie the game at nine.  
  • Arcadia broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring six runs in the frame. Massielo drove home Madera with a single for his second RBI in as many innings. Cheeseman then singled up the middle driving home Curley. Ryan Smolen was the next batter and drove home Cheeseman with an RBI single. Matt Donchez closed out the scoring in the inning as he hit a two-run home run, extending the Knights lead to 15-9. 
  • The Knights drove home three more runs in the eight as Curley singled to right field, bringing home Madera and Cheeseman hit his first home run of the season, scoring Curley, bringing the Arcadia lead to 18-9. Swarthmore added a run in the bottom half of the inning.  
  • The offensive explosion finished in the ninth inning as Madera singled to left field, bringing home Donchez, giving the Knights a 19-9 lead.
