Arcadia's Coordinator of Student-Athlete Success and Leadership, Oliver Moe, Arcadia women's ice hockey student-athlete, Jo Coates and Arcadia women's lacrosse student-athlete Emily Ruggiero attended the virtual NCAA Inclusion Forum, hosted by the organization at the end of June.
The Forum brought together administrators, coaches and student-athletes from member schools around this year's theme of "It's Time: Delivering on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging." It was the 10th annual event.
The list of speakers was full of experts representing the NCAA office of inclusion's five core areas: disabilities, international student issues, LGBTQ matters, race/ethnicity and women/gender equity.
The forum's speakers featured Billie Jean King, Candace Parker, Haben Girma and Yorri Berry.
"My biggest takeaway is a comment from Billie Jean King. She said something along the lines of 'just ask for what you want' which is how she ended up with a partial ownership of the Dodgers," Coates explained. "This relates to my experience at Arcadia, because almost everyone at AU is super accommodating and is willing to listen if you just ask."
"The 2022 NCAA Inclusion Forum provided an outlet for inspiring content to be shared amongst a variety of folks in the higher education realm, including student-athletes, who are passionate about Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion," Moe said. "Something Candace Parker said that stood out to me is that 'there are always voices to be heard, it's just whether or not we listen.' This point was something I came back to often when speaking with Jo and Emily about their experiences and perspectives both at the forum and how it related to them as student-athletes at Arcadia."
