The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) recently celebrated a significant achievement in its Kidney Transplant Program, having performed its 500th kidney transplant. The program, which began in March 1993, has grown to be one of the most active and successful worldwide.
Reflecting on this milestone, CHOP's Division of Nephrology is initiating fundraising efforts to support patients transitioning from pediatric to adult care. "Our vision is that every patient with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) receives the personalized, family-centered healthcare and resources to support them on the journey from childhood to adulthood, enabling them to thrive and reach their maximum potential," said a spokesperson.
The hospital aims to reduce barriers to optimal care and promote overall well-being by assisting CKD patient families with financial and logistical challenges related to healthcare access. This includes help with transportation, parking, long-term hospital stay costs, resource coordination, educational sessions, support groups for patients and caregivers, and personalized assistance for transitioning to adult care.
Additionally, CHOP is committed to advancing clinical care and research through innovative projects such as developing an in-clinic biopsy suite and streamlining laboratory support for easier blood and urine collection. Future projects may also include mini-grants for promising research aimed at reducing treatment burdens and improving transplant access.
Enhancing workforce capabilities is another priority for CHOP. The hospital seeks funding for staff training and development as well as professional development opportunities for various healthcare providers involved in patient care.
Those interested in supporting these initiatives can donate to CHOP's kidney transplant fund or contact Margaret “Maddie” Breslin, Associate Director of Development at breslinm1@chop.edu or 267-426-6433.
