Fox Chase Cancer Center's Dr. Alycia So has been inducted as a fellow into the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery, an organization with a long-standing history in advancing surgical practices and public health since its establishment in 1879.
Dr. So expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am very honored to be welcomed into an organization with such an illustrious history. I am looking forward to being in the company of some of the most renowned surgeons in the area and am eager to play a role in the academy’s mission of improving the science and practice of surgery.”
Jeffrey Farma, MD, FACS, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center, remarked on Dr. So's induction: “Fox Chase is proud to have another of its talented surgeons join the ranks of the fellows of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery. With Dr. So’s induction, Fox Chase Cancer Center continues to be well represented as home to some of the best and brightest surgeons in Philadelphia.”
To become a fellow at this prestigious academy, candidates must fulfill several criteria including holding a medical or osteopathy degree from a recognized institution, board certification in a surgical specialty by an American board, or fellowship with the American College of Surgeons. They also need nominations from existing fellows and approval from the council before election.
Dr. So earned her bachelor's degree from Rutgers University and her medical degree from Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania. Her training includes residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Since joining Fox Chase in September 2024, Dr. So has specialized in breast surgical oncology and received numerous awards for her work including those recognizing compassion and excellence in patient care. Her research contributions include over 20 publications related to breast cancer and she has engaged in global health initiatives like research fellowships and projects aimed at improving maternal-fetal health outcomes abroad.
