Matthew Mangold, a nurse at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, has been named one of three finalists for the 2025 Extraordinary Healer award. This national honor recognizes oncology nurses whose dedication and skill enhance patient care. The award is presented by CURE Media Group and Oncology Nursing News, with the winner to be announced on April 9 during the Oncology Nursing Society’s Annual Congress in Denver.
Mangold expressed his gratitude for being recognized by his peers, stating, "I am very excited and humbled to be recognized and nominated by my colleagues for this very great honor."
His passion for honoring veterans led him to create the Radiating Valor initiative at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Through this program, Mangold presents handcrafted wooden American flags to veteran patients on their last day of treatment. Erin Longstreth-Papsun, Clinical Director of Ambulatory Network Clinics & Radiation Oncology Nursing at Fox Chase, praised Mangold's dedication: “We are extremely lucky to have Matt on our team... Watching firsthand the moment he presents the flag to his patients is both heartwarming and humbling.”
In addition to his clinical work, Mangold contributes as a member of both the Patient Education Committee and the Staff Wellness Committee at Fox Chase Cancer Center. His focus on patient advocacy is a key aspect of his role.
Mike Hennessy Jr., President and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, emphasized the importance of oncology nurses like Mangold: “Oncology nurses are true heroes, providing not just medical care but also hope, strength, and unwavering support to patients and their families... It is an honor to celebrate these extraordinary individuals.”
