Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has been awarded over $1.3 million by the Eagles Autism Foundation to support five autism research projects over the next two years. These projects, which are part of CHOP's research initiatives, range from expanding existing programs to exploring new and innovative approaches.
The grants were allocated to evidence-based projects that align with the mission of the Eagles Autism Foundation and address immediate community needs. An international team of researchers evaluated proposals based on significance, innovation, approach, and potential impact in the field of autism.
Five projects have been selected for funding starting in 2025:
Dr. Hakon Hakonarson will lead a study on variants of the ADGRB3 gene potentially linked to autism, aiming to develop diagnostic and treatment strategies.
Dr. Laura McGarry will investigate the role of inhibitory interneurons in autism associated with Dravet syndrome, building on previous research into epilepsy and developmental delays.
Dr. Jerome Clatot will focus on mutations in the SCN2A gene related to autism, seeking to understand its role in brain development and explore therapeutic targets.
Dr. Naiara Akizu will study small genetic variants in chromatin regulators that contribute to polygenic neurodevelopmental disorders, examining their effect on gene expression.
CHOP’s Fostering Health Program received a grant to aid children in foster care with autism spectrum disorder by providing case management and addressing transportation barriers.
Since 2016, CHOP has received more than $6 million from the Eagles Autism Foundation for various research and community projects. CHOP was a founding beneficiary during the 2018 launch of the Eagles Autism Challenge, scheduled again for May 17, 2025. The Center for Autism Research at CHOP collaborates with the foundation for events like Eagles Huddle Up for Autism, set for March 30, 2025.
