CSAC to Crown Five Champions This Weekend

Colonial States Athletic Conference issued the following announcement on May 6.

The 2022 Colonial States Athletic Conference will crown five champions this weekend, as Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Outdoor Track and Field will hold their championships on Saturday and Sunday. Baseball begins its two-weekend run on Saturday with four teams vying for a spot in the championship series slated for next weekend.

The 2022 edition of the CSAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship will feature a repeat of the 2019 match-up as second-ranked Montclair State (12-4, 5-1 CSAC) travels to South Jersey to take on top-seeded Stockton University (15-2, 6-0 CSAC). The game is slated for 1 p.m. faceoff at Stockton’s Turf Field.

Montclair will be vying for its first CSAC title, after finishing as the runner-up in 2019. Stockton, who defeated Montclair 15-14 back on April 2, will be looking to capture its second title.

Back in 2019, Stockton outscored Montclair, 6-1, in the fourth quarter to take a 14-11 win.

Women’s Lacrosse

Top-seeded Bryn Athyn and second-seeded Notre Dame of Maryland will meet for the first time in the championship match of the 2022 CSAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The match, hosted by Bryn Athyn, is slated for a 1 p.m. first draw.

Bryn Athyn (10-2, 6-0 CSAC) is looking for its first CSAC title in women’s lacrosse, while Notre Dame of Maryland (8-5, 5-1 CSAC) is looking for its third CSAC title. The Gators defeated Keystone in 2019 for its first title, then defeated Wilson at home in 2021. There was no 2020 title due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two teams met back on April 2, with Bryn Athyn taking a 23-16 win over the Gators in Baltimore.

Softball

Due to rainy conditions over Friday and Saturday, the 2022 Softball Championship is set to be held on Sunday at Wilson starting a noon. Due to the change, the tournament is now single elimination.

At noon, second-seeded Rosemont (17-15, 13-3 CSAC) will take on third-seed and defending champion Cedar Crest (19-12, 12-4). At 2 p.m., top-seeded Wilson (22-9-1, 14-2 CSAC) will take on fifth-seed Keystone (15-18, 8-10 CSAC). The winners of the two games, will meet at 4 p.m. for the CSAC title.

Wilson’s only two losses came at the hands of Rosemont and Cedar Crest. Rosemont swept its series with Cedar Crest, while splitting with Keystone. Cedar Crest swept its series with Keystone.

Both Cedar Crest and Wilson will be looking for their third straight appearance in the championship game, while Rosemont and Keystone are looking to appear in the CSAC title game for the first time in school history.   

Outdoor Track and Field

The 2022 CSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships move to a new location this year, as Alfred State hosts the two-day event starting on Saturday.

The Penn State-Behrend men’s team will be looking for its sixth straight championship, as the Lions have captured the team title since the inception of the championship in 2016.

Host Alfred State is looking for its second straight women’s championship, as the Pioneers won its first CSAC title last season, snapping PSU-Behrend’s four-year run at the championship.

This weekend’s championship also featured the first appearance of Gallaudet University in the two-day event. The Bison did not compete in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID

Baseball

While the championship series is not slated to start till next weekend, four teams will play in the semifinals starting on Sunday. Top-seeded Keystone (19-16, 10-2 CSAC) will host fourth-seeded Saint Elizabeth (14-20, 7-5 CSAC), while second-seeded Wilson (27-9, 10-2 CSAC) will host third-seed Cairn (26-14, 8-4 CSAC). Both series will be best-of-three, with two games slated for noon on Sunday. The if necessary game will take place at 3 p.m. on Monday.

Keystone is the 12-time champion, with Wilson and Cairn each looking to the return to the championship series. Wilson was the runner-up in 2021, while Cairn was the runner-up in 2019.
