The Association of Health Care Journalists has brought attention to new research on the effects of news reporting related to community firearm violence. This study was published in the journal PLOS ONE and led by Dr. Jessica H. Beard, who is affiliated with Temple University Hospital and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

Dr. Beard serves as the Interim Trauma Program Medical Director at Temple University Hospital and holds positions as Director of Trauma Research and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.

The research identifies twelve specific elements within news content that are considered harmful. These elements were assessed for their severity across individual, community, and societal levels.
